THEREMIN-SENSORS_NETWORKED ORCHESTRA performance-oriented workshop
Led by: Andrey Smirnov ru & Givan Bela be_sk
|
.Date:
November 20. to 24. 2007
Deadline = October 31. 2007
.Location:
Kunstarkaden
Sparkassenstr.3, 80331, Munich
U+S Marienplaz.
.Description:
The workshop aims at introducing Theremin-sensors as a new concept
towards physical computing, focusing more on creative tasks in a form of long rehearsal.
The main purpose is to explore for ways of interaction and collaboration in the networked interactive environments, build an audiovisual THEREMIN-SENSORS ORCHESTRA
and perform with it.
a). T-sensors introduction /Andrey Smirnov/
We will try to make an unique audio/visual body-related instruments and play with air and water flows, vibrations of light beams, temperature, different mechanical vibrations, etc.
Five audio-visual installations, based on various applications of
Teremin-sensor technology
will be set up SensorLand to be used during the workshop as a ready made instruments as well as in the final performances.
You will learn:
Physical and technical details regarding the motion tracking.
Basic principles of operation of the Theremin based interactive systems.
Detecting motion and measuring it.
Art and music applications of interactive motion tracking systems.
Ways to integrate T-sensors in performance, dance, video, sound/art installations.
How to build an audiovisual orchestra and perform with it.
b). Network /Givan Bela/
An important issue in this workshop is to create a network together
to experiment with sharing sounds, images and data in order to create connected pieces to perform with.
We consider it more important to make a good performance with the given electronics than to be only busy with the electronics or programming, so most of the time will be spent playing with Theremin-sensors in a given environments SensorLand.
You will learn:
How to create an interactive system with your laptop.
How to involve your body and gesture into your interactive system.
How to unite different laptops, platforms, operating system into the network to share sounds, images and data in order to create common interactive environment.
.Expected outcome:
A musical performance of the workshop participants using Theremin based instruments
.Palrticipants profile:
This will be certainly of interest to any dancer, musician, visualist /video artist/, acrobat,
theater player or whoever is toying around with technology.
Bring your basic skills and instruments and let's turn it all into a new instrument to perform with together.
Female artists encouraged to apply!
.More or less Schedule:
Day 1 (12:00 to 17:00) - Introduction into the T-s technology.
Day 2 (12:00 to 17:00) - Introduction in pd/max programming, with specifics of the T-s objects.
Day 3 (12:00 to 17:00) - Introduction into sound and visual modeling, how to connect them to the T-s.
Day 4 (12:00 to 17:00) - Connecting the T-s to the network and performing together. Different setups.
Day 5 (12:00 to 14:00) - Making T-s networked pieces. Rehearsals during daytime.
15:00 to 18:00 - Combined rehearsal - everyone should be performance-ready.
20:00 - 22:00 - Performance
.Requirements:
Some skills in MAX/MSP, PD or similar.
Minimal configuration:
Laptop with PD or MAX/MSP installed
One free USB port
Personal headphones
5 m. long /or longer/ audio cable for each participant to connect to the main mixer
(mono). Cable should have appropriate plug to fit participant's sound card and jack plug
at the mixer side.
It is important to remember that in many cases the use of extra software will result in
significant increase of latency and other possible timing problems.
.Language:
English.
.Regulations:
Max 15 participants.
The cost of the workshop is 50 euro. Students, female artists and those who are taking part in the second workshop - 40 euro.
Digital USB sensors for testing, experimenting and performance will be provided by instructor /15 sets/.
.About facilitators:
Andrey Smirnov is an independent researcher and developer of electronic music techniques, with a
particular interest in design and development of both hard- and software sensor
technology with complex relationships between the performer's actions and the
interpretation of this information in non-linear methods using custom software.
He is a founder of the Theremin Center for Electro acoustic Music and Multimedia in
Moscow, where he gives lectures and workshops on the basics of electro acoustic music,
musical acoustics and psychoacoustics, resent computer music technologies and multimedia.

Guy Van Belle/Givan Bela has been prominently involved in the use and development of media for artistic purposes since 1990.
His most important organizations were/are: Stellingname (1984-1989), Young Farmers Caim Future (1990-2000), dBonanzah (1998-2002), mXHz.org = machine cent'red humanz (2002-?), Society of Algorithm (2004-?),'The Baku 2022 Foundation' (2007-?) and OKNO (together with Annemie Maes and Gert Aertsen).
He has been working across Europe, with a primary focus on 'areas of transition' in South, Central and Eastern Europe. His streaming workshops have resulted in the establishment of active new networks among artists, institutions and cultural activists. His work are mainly synaesthetic, realtime generated, abstract, algorithmic and gradually abandoning the familiar settings, parameters and skills for production, display and reception of the artwork.
He lives in Bratislava and Brussels.

THE LAST THEATRE SHOW EVER
September 21 - 27, 2009
or how to dismantle theatre by making an electro-digital instrument out of it.
|
The project is an experiment about trying to build a new future for an old discipline, in 7 days. Electronic and digital artists use their tools to change all the aspects and parameters of conventional theatre. It will be realized in two WORKSHOPS/ACTS. The first workshop/ACT will start up in Munich at i-camp on September 21, 2009 and continue over seven days
leading to 'THE LAST THEATRE SHOW EVER' on September 27, 17:00
